Atlas is a spin-off of the agricultural department of a leading national insurance brokerage, which in 2012 launched a project exclusively dedicated to the agricultural sector.
In 2013, tomatoes were chosen as the first crop for harvest insurance policies, covering an area of 1,046 hectares (around 8% of national tomato production).
In 2016, new crops were added to the portfolio, including apples, pears, plums, maize, rice and peppers. By that time, the insured area for tomatoes represented approximately 99% of national production.
In 2020, Atlas became the first agricultural MGA in the Iberian Peninsula, establishing strategic partnerships with some of the largest players in the international insurance market.
During the 2020 campaign, already operating as an insurance company accredited by IFAP, Atlas strengthened its portfolio with vineyard insurance, covering 61,000 plots and more than 16,000 hectares belonging to 15,000 producers in the Vinho Verde region — the largest wine commission in Portugal.
In 2021, Atlas achieved coverage of close to 50,000 hectares nationwide, with an even more diversified crop portfolio, consolidating relationships with loyal clients and expanding the range of insured crops, including avocados and berries.
The year 2022 was marked by the implementation of strategic partnerships with major producer associations and organisations, the doubling of the client portfolio, the expansion of insurance activity to Chile, and significant growth in both insured area and premium volume in Portugal.
In 2023, Atlas developed innovative insurance covers tailored to crop-specific risks, invested in risk modelling and forecasting technologies, and advanced the development of digital platforms for claims management and monitoring.
In 2024, Atlas recorded an increase in market share in its traditional sectors, continued to expand into new crops, and strengthened its presence in new geographies, including the Portuguese island territories.
In 2025, Atlas began preparing a new phase of its development by adopting a business model based on the distribution of risk across multiple insurers, reducing reliance on a single partner. This strategic evolution, supported by the partnership with Lloyd’s, strengthened the robustness of Atlas’s offerings and enabled a more confident approach to internationalisation.
Throughout the year, Atlas maintained a strong focus on innovation and close relationships with farmers, developing solutions tailored to producers’ specific needs through new covers, greater flexibility in coverage periods, and more efficient risk management models, including the use of differentiated deductibles.

Our Approach
Basic crop insurance is an essential tool in agriculture. However it far from meets the full needs of farmers. Basic crop insurance responds only to the risk associated with production and not to the individual and unique requirements of each crop. Atlas looks beyond the basic insurance coverage to address each customer’s full insurance needs. This breaks the mould of how agricultural insurance has been sold by domestic Portuguese insurers who have only sold standard solutions for all farmers and every type of crop. Tailor-made solutions are the defining feature of Atlas’s insurance offer meeting the full needs of Portuguese agriculture.
Mission
Atlas is rapidly becoming the leading agricultural MGA in the Iberian Peninsula offering real solutions to protect customers and allowing them to focus exclusively on their area of business expertise. This promotes an environment conducive to the evolution of the agriculture industry in the region.
Partners
Lloyd’s is a unique institution in the insurance sector: an organisation with more than 330 years of history, born from the entrepreneurial spirit of visionaries who believed in risk sharing as a driver of progress. Atlas has established a partnership with this global leader in insurance and reinsurance, benefiting from the collective intelligence and extensive expertise of the underwriters and brokers that make up the Lloyd’s market. This model enables the efficient use of shared resources, ensuring the capacity to cover risks in more than 200 territories, across all sectors and at any scale.
As a strategic partner, Lloyd’s adds value to Atlas by strengthening its ability to anticipate and understand complex risks, while contributing specialised knowledge to the development of relevant, innovative insurance solutions tailored to the needs of clients worldwide, including within the agricultural insurance sector.
