Atlas is the result of a project that started in 2012 dedicated exclusively to the agricultural sector.
In 2013 tomatoes were chosen for the first crop insurance policies, covering an area of 1,046Ha (about 8% of national tomato production).
In 2016 new crops were introduced into the portfolio, such as apples, pears, plums, corn, rice and peppers. At that time, the covered area for tomato cultivation was about 99% of national production.
In 2020, Atlas became the first agricultural MGA in the Iberian Peninsula, establishing partnerships with some of the biggest players in the international insurance market. The key strategic partner being Sompo International Insurance Company and its platform AgriSompo.
Sompo International underwrites risks in all of the main agricultural markets in the world, including the United States, China, Japan, India and also in South America. Their global portfolio represents a premium volume of more than US$ 1 billion (30 times higher than the Portuguese agricultural insurance market). This is a decisive factor when it comes to ensuring competitive conditions and credibility in the insurance sector.
In 2020, operating as an MGA with insurance capacity accredited by IFAP, Atlas strengthened its portfolio with vine cultivation; insuring 61,000 parcels in total and more than 16,000 hectares belonging to 15,000 producers in the Vinho Verde region – strong recognition from the largest wine commission in the country.
In 2021, Atlas covered a territory of close to 50,000Ha, with an even more varied portfolio of crops, consolidating relationships with loyal customers and increasing the portfolio of crops (including avocados and red fruits).
2022 was characterized by the implementation of strategic partnerships with main producer associations and organizations, by the doubling of the client portfolio, by the expansion of the insurance activity to Chile and by the sharp growth of the covered area and the associated premium in Portugal.
Who we are

Our Approach
Basic crop insurance is an essential tool in agriculture. However it far from meets the full needs of farmers. Basic crop insurance responds only to the risk associated with production and not to the individual and unique requirements of each crop. Atlas looks beyond the basic insurance coverage to address each customer’s full insurance needs. This breaks the mould of how agricultural insurance has been sold by domestic Portuguese insurers who have only sold standard solutions for all farmers and every type of crop. Tailor-made solutions are the defining feature of Atlas’s insurance offer meeting the full needs of Portuguese agriculture.
Mission
Atlas is rapidly becoming the leading agricultural MGA in the Iberian Peninsula offering real solutions to protect customers and allowing them to focus exclusively on their area of business expertise. This promotes an environment conducive to the evolution of the agriculture industry in the region.
Partners
In April 2020, Atlas signed a strategic partnership with Sompo International Holdings Ltd. This is an unprecedented and innovative partnership, combining Sompo's extensive experience in crop insurance and Atlas's excellent reputation and network in the national market.
